Alex Bregman was introduced to Chicago Cubs fans on Thursday at Wrigley Field, and he’s already made splash by choosing a new jersey number.
Bregman, who won two World Series titles with the Houston Astros and was an All-Star with the Boston Red Sox in 2025, has worn the No. 2 throughout his Major League career, but he will be wearing a new number when he runs to third base at Wrigley Field this season.
Throughout his career, Bregman has worn the No. 2 because he was the second-overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, picked one spot behind his new Cubs teammate Dansby Swanson.
When Bregman signed with the Cubs, there was talk over whether he’d be able to convince his new teammate Nico Hoerner to change his jersey number, but the All-Star said he didn’t even talk to Hoerner about the idea, because he had other ideas in mind.
“I wore number three because I wanted a third championship,” he said.
Cubs fans certainly wouldn’t be annoyed with another World Series title, especially since the team is marking the 10-year anniversary of their last championship in 2016 when they gather for the Cubs Convention this weekend in Chicago.
Bregman has plenty of other plans along with the convention, including attending Sunday’s Chicago Bears game at Soldier Field. He also attended a Chicago Blackhawks game after his signing was first reported, and received a standing ovation from the crowd when he was shown on the videoboard.
Bregman and the Cubs will report to spring training in Arizona in mid-February, with their first full-squad workout set for February 16.
He will then join Team USA for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, taking the field along with his new Cubs teammate Pete Crow-Armstrong.
