Regional Transportation District officials are promoting public transportation as a safe and convenient way to reach downtown and the Denver Broncos’ playoff game against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, adding extra train cars for an anticipated surge in ridership and pointing to existing bus routes.
The RTD Transit Police “will be deployed across the system,” focusing on bus stops and rail stations near Empower Field at Mile High and Ball Arena, where the Denver Nuggets host the Washington Wizards on Saturday night, agency officials said in an announcement Thursday morning.
They plan to add rail cars to the E, W and N lines “to accommodate expected higher volumes of fans” for the games and other downtown events, their announcement said.
Transit officials directed potential riders to use an online app or the agency’s website, where they said clicking on “Broncos” or “Nuggets” will show “all transit options from a customer’s current location” to the game.
“Customers are encouraged to be patient and prepare for large crowds,” officials said, especially after the games.
Final trains from Union Station, Ball Arena, Empower Field and downtown Denver stations were set to run after midnight Saturday, as late as 2:01 a.m. from Empower Field.
The Broncos are scheduled to play the Buffalo Bills at their home field in an AFC divisional playoff game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
RTD directors at a board meeting last week anticipated high demand and instructed agency staffers to provide public transit to the stadium and downtown from four locations around metro Denver.
