FPL Challenge GW22 Picks: One Point for Every Chance Created ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

Who are the best FPL Challenge GW22 picks? All players will be awarded an additional point for each chance they created for a teammate this week. We use Opta data to find the top players to target in the Premier League.

Week two of the Archetypes theme puts chance creation at the heart of player selection.

GW22 of FPL Challenge, The Playmaker, rewards all players with an additional point for every chance they create for teammates.

Two points were awarded in GW21 for successful tackles, so the crux of this week’s subject isn’t quite as powerful, and that means there is room for more typical selections rather than simply only targeting playmakers.

Chances created are a combination of goal assists and key passes – here’s how the two are defined in our Opta Football Stats Definitions page.

Goal Assist:

The final touch from a teammate that leads to the recipient of the ball scoring a goal. If the assist is deflected by an opposition player, it must be deemed as travelling to the goalscorer irrespective of the deflection.

Key Pass:

The final pass from a player to their teammate who then attempts a shot on goal without scoring.

With those definitions in mind, here are the players, with a minimum of 750 minutes played, who create the most chances per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season:

What becomes immediately obvious from a simple glance at this table is the fact that all of these players are logged as midfielders on FPL, and for that reason, we’re utilising a 1-1-3-1 formation this week.

Goalkeeper

Emiliano Martínez: Aston Villa vs Everton (H)

Liverpool and Arsenal have the best chance at keeping a clean sheet this week, but we’re only able to pick one player per club, and we’re electing to save our selections from those two teams for players further upfield.

We’re hoping Emiliano Martínez will be fit enough to start in goal this week for Aston Villa against Everton at Villa Park.

Villa don’t actually keep a great deal of clean sheets, and yet only Arsenal (5) have conceded fewer goals in home games than Unai Emery’s side (8) this season in the Premier League.

Everton, meanwhile, are low on confidence with just one win from their last six, and will continue to be without talisman Iliman Ndiaye, as well as Idrissa Gueye, due to their ongoing participation with Senegal at AFCON 2025.

Defender

Pedro Porro: Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham (H)

Patrick Dorgu (1.8) and Maxim De Cuyper (1.7) are the FPL defenders with the most chances created per 90 minutes this season, but their fixtures against Manchester City and Bournemouth don’t offer great chances of a clean sheet. Given that clean sheets are still four times more valuable than chances created for defenders this week, they must take precedence.

Instead, we are combining the two methods of accruing points by picking Tottenham’s Pedro Porro, who will face West Ham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend.

The Spaniard averages 1.4 chances created per 90 minutes this season, which is a strong return for a defender.

Spurs are struggling at the moment, and Thomas Frank’s job looks to be genuinely under threat, but one club who are struggling even more are West Ham.

The Hammers have failed to win any of their last 10 games in the Premier League, while they have collected only one clean sheet all season.

Spurs actually have strong underlying defensive data in home games, ranking joint-third for expected goals conceded (10.0), alongside Manchester United.

Midfielders

Rayan Cherki: Manchester City vs Manchester United (A)

The name of the game this week is creating chances, and that leaves us with no choice but to select the king of chance creation, Rayan Cherki.

The Frenchman is creating 3.4 chances per 90 minutes this season in the Premier League, a cut above any other player. The last player to exceed that rate in a single campaign in the competition was Kevin De Bruyne in 2023-24, with 4.3 per 90.

Cherki’s previous appearance at Old Trafford was a 5-4 defeat in extra-time with Lyon, with a 121st-minute winner from Harry Maguire eliminating the visitors from the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League.

This game has been pencilled in on Cherki’s calendar ever since he signed for City – “I didn’t like it when Manchester United won the game because I’m a Lion [a Lyon player]”, he said in June before his City debut. “And now I wait for the game to kill them.”

Declan Rice: Arsenal vs Nottingham Forest (A)

This may seem like an odd selection given Martin Ødegaard (2.7) and Bukayo Saka (2.3) rank fourth and seventh, respectively, this season for chances created per 90 minutes, but we’re a fan of the multiple routes to points offered by Declan Rice.

At 1.8 per 90, Rice still puts up strong numbers for chances created, and with 10.8 defensive contributions per 90 in tow, as well as four goals, he makes for a player who almost always returns points of some kind.

Indeed, in his last three away games, Rice has put up scores of 6, 11 and 17 points in FPL, netting twice against Bournemouth in his last match on the road.

He is our choice of captain this week.

Anton Stach: Leeds United vs Fulham (H)

Anton Stach may seem like a left-field selection given the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Florian Wirtz are still available, but hear us out.

Stach, for all intents and purposes, is to Leeds what Rice is to Arsenal.

Not only is he a great physical presence in midfield, with 9.6 defensive contributions per 90, but he is also capable of popping up with goals (3) and assists (5) – especially at Elland Road.

In his last four home league games, the German has created five, three, five and four chances, as well as adding two goals for good measure. Those four games were against Chelsea, Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Man Utd.

The secret for Stach is his delivery from corners, and more than half of his created chances come from set plays. This is why he’s sixth for chances created per 90 this term, and this is why he makes our team.

Forward

Hugo Ekitiké: Liverpool vs Burnley (H)

Given they host Burnley at Anfield, we had to pick a Liverpool attacker this week, and we’re siding with Hugo Ekitiké.

Liverpool are still a far cry from the team they were last season, but they are nonetheless improved of late, and a nine-game unbeaten run in the Premier League has taken some heat off.

Burnley, meanwhile, are going from bad to worse, with three draws and nine defeats from their last 12 league games.

They have conceded multiple goals in all but one away game this season, and that puts them top of the list for teams to target this week.

Ekitiké has been carrying a knock of late, but he returned to action against Barnsley at the weekend in the FA Cup, scoring and assisting in a 30-minute cameo from the bench.

GW22 Honourable Mentions

Bruno Fernandes ranks second in the Premier League this season for chances created per 90, with 3.3. Carrick may well inspire Man Utd to a strong performance against a City team with a weakened defence on Saturday at Old Trafford.

Florian Wirtz averages 2.2 chances per 90 minutes this season and has the benefit of facing Burnley at Anfield. We elected to choose Ekitiké as our Liverpool pick, but Wirtz is more than capable of punishing that decision.

If Martínez is unavailable in goal for Aston Villa, consider switching him to Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, and then switching Porro to whoever starts at left-back for Aston Villa – Lucas Digne (1.2) and Ian Maatsen (1.2) both create more chances per 90 than Matty Cash (0.9) on the opposite side.
