SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — The last time Tesoro’s boys basketball team stepped into the gym at San Juan Hills, it left with a 42-point loss.
Tesoro came away with a much better outcome Wednesday, as the visiting Titans beat San Juan Hills 62-58 in a South Coast League game.
The Titans (19-3, 2-0) are tied with San Clemente atop the South Coast League standings. San Juan Hills (12-9, 2-1) is in third place.
“Any road win in the South Coast League is awesome,” Tesoro coach Steve Garrett said. “Last year we got drubbed here by 40. It’s good to have kids be out in tough situations and overcome that. I thought our guys did a really good job with those last four minutes of the game.”
Tesoro led by double-digits midway through the fourth quarter and kept San Juan Hills off the scoreboard for the first five minutes of the quarter.
San Juan Hills cut the lead to four but Tesoro was able to make late free throws to keep the Stallions at arm’s length.
Brothers Owen and Carson Hatch led Tesoro offensively. Owen Hatch had a team-high 16 points with eight of them coming in the fourth quarter. Carson added 15 points. He had seven points in the first quarter to help Tesoro build an early 10-point lead.
Carson, a senior, said his brother, a sophomore, has exceeded his expectations this season.
“I always knew we were going to play with each other my senior year and I’ve been excited,” Carson said. “He’s been bigger and better than I thought he was going to be. We’ve been working and I feel like we have good chemistry together.”
“In a game like that, with all the commotion and chaos, it’s fun knowing where he is on the court and what he’s going to give me,” Owen said. “It’s comfortable.”
San Juan Hills was missing multiple key starters due to injury but still had some big offensive performances. Garrett Brehmer had 31 points for the Stallions and made five 3-pointers. Rocco Jensen had 22 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Tesoro went on an 11-0 run in the first quarter that prompted a timeout by San Juan Hills.
The Stallions outscored Tesoro by six points in the second quarter and went into halftime trailing 29-27.
The teams traded leads a few times early in the third quarter before Tesoro went on a run early in the fourth to take a double-digit lead.
Tesoro’s Dean Mika scored nine of his 10 points in the third quarter. Max Draper had a balanced stat sheet with eight points, 18 rebounds and six assists.
“He’s a rebounding machine,” Garrett said of Draper. “He just goes and gets the ball. He knows what the bottom line is and that’s getting the ball.”
The rabid student sections for both teams made for an exciting atmosphere. The schools are less than seven miles apart and have played each other 18 times since 2015.
“They had a great crowd and that’s how it’s supposed to be,” Garrett said. “Basketball is very unique with the fans on top of you. These guys can hear everything they were saying. They had fantastic fans and it’s good for our guys to play in environments like this.”
Tesoro, which is ranked No. 13 in Orange County, will play at Dana Hills on Friday. The Titans most recently won a South Coast League championship in 2023 and went on to win a CIF-SS championship that season.
