ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Iranian-Americans gathered in downtown Rochester to protest and raise awareness about the ongoing situation in Iran. The protests in Iran began on Dec. 28 due, in part, to rising food prices and inflation. More than 2,400 protesters have died, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency.
Amir Hassanzadeh, who helped organize the Rochester protest, said, “Red meat has become a luxury in Iran and that’s because of inflation. People are struggling with their basic day-to-day needs.”
Hassanzadeh, who moved to the U.S. from Tehran eight years ago, said he last heard from his family five days ago. An internet shutdown, which began on Jan. 8, has made communication difficult.
Niaz Abdolrahim, another protester from Tehran, said, “I consider myself Iranian-American but my roots are there. I, I lived in all those streets. I look at the faces and all of them are like my brothers and sisters. I cannot stay silent.”
Abdolrahim, who moved to the U.S. in 2009, expressed her desire for U.S. intervention but is unsure of the best approach. “You know what, for 50 years we’ve heard from West, from US that ‘we are standing by the side of the Iranian people.’ What happened? Nothing like, you know, just words don’t do anything,” she said.
The protest in Rochester was part of a broader effort to draw attention to the situation in Iran. Hassanzadeh mentioned plans for another protest this weekend to continue raising awareness.
