SANTA CLARA — Ricky Pearsall Jr. hasn’t hit top-end speed since late September but said Wednesday he was optimistic about playing for the 49ers Saturday night when they visit the Seattle Seahawks.
Fred Warner is probably a week away — meaning the sixth-seeded 49ers (13-5) will have to beat the No. 1 Seahawks (14-3) in an NFL divisional playoff game (Fox, 5 p.m.) for him to complete an improbable in-season comeback from a broken and dislocated right ankle sustained on Oct. 12.
Pearsall and Warner were listed as limited in practice along with Yetur Gross-Matos (knee), guard Dominick Puni (ankle), edge rusher Keion White (groin, hamstring) and linebacker Dee Winters (ankle). The only two players that did not practice were safety Ji’Ayir Brown (hamstring) and linebacker/special teamer Luke Gifford (quad).
Both players have missed a large chunk of the season due to injuries, with Pearsall’s issue first arising with a PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) strain on Sept. 28 against Jacksonville, then aggravated it in Week 18 against the Chicago Bears.
Pearsall has played in nine of 18 games, having missed the season finale against Seattle and the 23-19 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild card round.
The second-year wide receiver conceded Wednesday he hasn’t been full speed according to GPS markers since the initial injury.
“If I’m being honest, I haven’t ran full, full speed to hit those numbers that I’ve been hitting before since Week 4,” Pearsall said. “Had a set back in the Bears game. I have to do everything I can to get back out there and be with the guys.”
Pearsall went through warmups during the media window and ran some routes at something less than full speed during drills. Rather than attempt to play through the injury, Pearsall is listening to doctor and the athletic training staff.
“It’s communicating and seeing what the best plan is for me,” Pearsall said. “I’ve been playing this game since I was seven years old and I want to play every game until I hang the cleats up.”
In Pearsall’s absence Demarcus Robinson had a breakout game against Philadelphia with six receptions for 11 yards and a touchdown.
And while Pearsall may play and Warner probably won’t against Seattle, you wouldn’t know it from watching them in the opening practice drills. Warner looked to be moving at something approximating full speed while doing some sled work with his position group.
“I’ve been away for a little bit but being back with the practice jersey and helmet and running around with the guys is great,” Warner said of his return to practice Tuesday. “I’ll have time to reminisce after it’s all over. My only goal right now is to have the best day today to have a chance at beating Seattle.”
Left tackle Trent Williams felt inspired by Warner actually plays or not.
“I just think the fact that Fred even has a jersey on less than 100 days after what happened to him uplifts the team,” Williams said. “Having him there, having his face in the locker room, it’s motivation. It helps everybody. It gives us a boost of energy.”
Sigle steps in
Marques Sigle didn’t take it personally when he was removed from the starting lineup after a 26-23 overtime win over the Rams on Oct. 2. Both he and veteran Jason Pinnock were replaced in the starting lineup by Malik Mustapha and Ji’Ayir Brown. Sigle had 13 tackles in the game, but it looked to defensive coordinator Robert Saleh like he needed a break.
“After the Rams game, felt like he needed to take a step back and just kind of absorb a little bit more and now he’s getting his opportunity, Saleh said. “Obviously the first game went pretty good.”
Sigle, a fifth-round draft pick from Kansas State, said there was no loss of confidence and he applied himself fully to being a core special teams player. He had eight tackles in 40 snaps after Brown left with a hamstring strain. With Brown not practicing yet this week, Sigle would be in line to start against the Seahawks.
“In a rookie year, you’re going to have your ups and your downs, but one thing you’ve got to hae is your confidence, and that’s something I’ll always have,” Sigle said. “I trusted my ability, that I can go ou tand make a play, and my teammates trust me.”

Some 49ers fans who didn’t even know the name Garret Wallow before Sunday’s wild card win over the Eagles now don’t want to see him leave the lineup. Wallow had 10 tackles and along with Eric Kendricks helped to the 49ers to their best defensive performance, giving up just 119 yards in the second half.
Wallow was signed off the Denver practice squad Dec. 8 and could start again if Winters doesn’t play against Seattle.
“With us not being here a month ago, the only thing we could do was over communicate,” Wallow said of he and Kendricks playing side by side. “It was one of those situations where some guys went down and I had to step up and just perform for the guys.”
Skyy Bang Reverse Pass
The 49ers’ wild card win over the Eagles was set up by a momentum reversing play suggested by offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak. And the man who set it up was wide receiver Skyy Moore.
Moore doesn’t play much at wide receiver. He got only 10 snaps against Philadelphia, but the 49ers like to use him as a change-of-pace runner on jet sweeps. Moore did just that, gaining three yards running to his right to to set up a third-and-1 at the Philadelphia 31-yard line.
After Brock Purdy snuck for two yards and a first down, the quarter ended and the 49ers had baited the hook. On Kubiak’s suggestion, they ran what appeared to be another jet sweep to the left, but this time Moore gave it to Jauan Jennings, a former high school quarterback. Jennings rolled right and threw what Kubiak called an “A-plus” throw to Christian McCaffrey for the 29-yard touchdown.
“We had the timeout, we had the end of the end of the quarter, so it kind of gave us some time to put some thought into what we wanted to do and we’re on the right hash, which is what we have to run that play on,” Kubiak said. “I just saw it on the call sheet and I was like, ‘this might be good.’ ”
Which is the same thing Moore thought when he was being followed while heading to his left with the ball before giving it up to Jennings. I was a much longer pass than the cross-field dart Jennings executed with McCaffrey in Super Bowl LVIII.
“That was definitely a cool play. As soon as I went in motion, I saw the corner came in motion with me, Moore said. “So that meant it was man-to-man and and I thought, `This is going to be there.’ ”
NOTABLE
— Saleh said he had not interviewed with of the nine teams looking for head coaches and is still working out his schedule. He’ll likely interview with someone Sunday, if not before.
— Williams (hamstring) was listed as a full participant in practice, as was wide receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring).
— Key players who were limited for Seattle at practice included linebacker Demarcus Lawrence (Achilles) and cornerack Tariq Woolen (oblique).
