A page-to-screen adaptation of the 2018 Carola Lovering novel of the same name, the Hulu romantic drama recounts the physical pull and psychological toxicity in the on-again, off-again relationship between Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco — played by real-life couple Grace Van Patten and Jackson White, respectively — they navigate college and post-collegiate life in New York City.
"[Series creator Meaghan Oppenheimer] did the most brilliant job seamlessly adapting the book to TV, and I’m so in awe," Lovering told Ellein an October 2022 interview. "I signed on as a consulting producer, which basically means that I was sort of available throughout the process if anyone had questions about the book...what I remember saying mostly is that I just wanted the emotional themes in the book to stay there. I really think that Meaghan and everyone involved has done such an incredible job with that — like, the depiction of a toxic relationship in a real, raw way is totally there, and the dysfunction between Lucy and Stephen is there, and the emotional isolation and shame that Lucy feels is there."

The biggest differences between Tell Me Lies the book and the TV show
The show adds new characters and combines old ones
For example, some folks were fully created for the series — like Drew (Benjamin Wadsworth), the younger brother of Spencer House's Mike Wrigley — while other characters are composites of those featured in the book. Lucy's on-page friend Jackie is nowhere to be found in the show, with her traits instead spread amongst Lucy's other Baird College buddies Bree Benson (Catherine Missal) and Pippa McAllister(Sonia Mena). And in the book, Lydia is just a friend of Stephen's, not his fiancée; he is engaged to a different woman named Jillian in Lovering's novel.

That means that the series loses out on the interiority of both Lucy and Stephen's characters, with the latter in particular differing from the book to the series. In Lovering's writing, Stephen is more of an overt sociopath and narcissist than the show's depiction, with a chilling inner world colored by a lack of empathy and manipulative behavior, where the Hulu series more readily softens and sympathizes with the young man.

Though CJ's betrayal also exists on the page, it takes a different shape: Lucy's mom gets caught by her daughter having sex with Gabe, Lucy's old crush and the brother of her best friend Macy. Changing the "who" of CJ's infidelity makes Lucy's issues with her mother less about jealousy and more about disloyalty, an emotional absence and lack of support compounded by the grief of her father's death.

"The show really delves into each character, and each character has such a distinct journey and inner turmoil that they're going through," actress Grace Van Patten explained to E! News. "You really get to know Lucy and Stephen in the book, but the show really dives into every character and it makes it so much more of an ensemble."
