The NCAA announced some crucial changes to the transfer portal in college basketball on Wednesday that will alter the course of the sport going forward.
The transfer portal window for men’s and women’s basketball will now open for a 15-day period on the day after the national championship games that conclude the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments. That change is effective immediately, which means that this coming April, on the day after both champions are crowned in the men’s and women’s games, the portal will then open for business to help shape the following season.
This huge, immediate change in April comes at the recommendation of the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Oversight Committees.
Another rule change announced has to do with new head coaches. When a head coaching change does occur, a 15-day period will now open 5 days after that particular new head coach gets hired or is announced publicly as the new head coach.
Furthermore, if a new head coach isn’t announced within 30 days of the previous head coach’s departure — and the 31st day following the head coach’s departure is after the championship game — a 15-day window will then open. That additional head coach departure window would be available only after the basketball transfer window opens through Jan. 2.
