Middle schoolers in east San Diego County step up for hungry families.
The CPMS Builders Club is an eighth-grade elective class at College Prep Middle School, a 2025 California Blue Ribbon School in Spring Valley.
The elective, which is led by eighth-grade science teacher Catherine Spencer, teaches students how to be leaders and positively affect the community.
Throughout the second quarter, students participate in activities like school clean-ups and creating positive posters that are displayed around the campus. But the biggest event of this quarter is our annual food drive, which supports the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.
This event is known as our “Stock the Pantry Food Drive” because it is usually scheduled before Christmas. The drive helps people in need get through the holidays without worrying about where and when they will get their next meal.
This year’s food drive was extremely successful, bringing in 711 pounds of food to provide 593 meals to those who are in need of food.
Around 10,000 people in San Diego are unhoused, and many more are in need of food.
This contribution from all of the students and families at College Prep Middle School touches many people’s lives, something we like to call sharing that Tiger Pride.
