Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has shone brightest in the biggest moments this season, truly earning his “Iceman” nickname.
Williams and the Bears have pulled off a string of high-profile comeback victories this season, including an incredible 31-27 win over the Green Bay Packers that marked the largest comeback victory in the team’s postseason history.
The Bears’ second-year quarterback was asked about his mentality in those types of moments for the Bears, and he described the sense of calm that he feels when the pressure is at its highest.
“I feel calm in those moments. I feel my conditioning is the best in those moments. I feel that I’m the best in those moments because of what I’ve prepared to be in those moments,” he said. “For myself, it’s just ‘next play, next play, next play,’ and then when you have to go make a play, it’s life or death in those moments.”
According to Pro Football Reference, Williams had a staggering six fourth quarter comebacks this season for the Bears, one of the best marks in NFL history. He then followed that up Saturday by leading the team back from a 21-3 deficit to their most hated rival, ultimately setting a Bears postseason record with 361 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns in the victory.
The No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Williams has been scrutinized heavily since even before he came into the league, but he insists that those that doubt him don’t figure into his thoughts when he’s preparing to play and when he’s on the field.
“That’s never been a worry of mine. Proving the doubters wrong or anything like that,” he said. “It’s a little extra motivation in that sense, but it’s not for me to prove them wrong. I know who I am. It’s my mindset to keep growing. It’s my mindset to keep that mindset of knowing who I am. Keep that mindset of knowing I’m the best when I’m on the field. When I’ve got the other ten guys around me that are fighting for me. It’s when I’ve got the best coach in the world.”
Williams set a new Bears single-season record by throwing for 3,942 yards during the regular season, and joined an exclusive club of Bears players who have thrown for 25 or more touchdowns in a season, as he tossed 27 touchdowns during the 2025 campaign.
Next Williams will try to join a remarkably small club: the group of Bears quarterbacks that have won multiple playoff games with the team. Sid Luckman and Jim McMahon share the record with three career playoff wins for the Bears, while Mike Tomczak and Rex Grossman each won two in their careers.
Kickoff between the Bears and Rams is set for 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, with the game airing on NBC.
