ROCHESTER, N.Y. — President Donald Trump announced plans to deny federal funding to states with sanctuary cities starting Feb. 1. Rochester is a sanctuary city, but Monroe County has not yet voted on its status. President Trump said he would target any states that have sanctuary cities.
News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with Monroe County Legislator Santos Cruz about the implications of the county becoming a sanctuary government.
Cruz said the topic of voting on sanctuary status was brought up months ago, but fears of losing federal funding halted progress. “We have yet to be able to pass that resolution through the floor to say, hey, we want the designation to become a sanctuary city county because of the fear,” Cruz said.
Cruz mentioned that about half of the county’s funds come from federal sources. Despite concerns over funding, he noted that many in his district fear ICE and recent raids in the city. He believes sanctuary status is necessary for protection.
“The need for it is to eliminate that fear, to let individuals know in our community that the kids are safe to go to school, that they are safe to go shopping for their food, that they are safe to conduct their business accordingly,” Cruz said.
Cruz hopes to bring the sanctuary status issue to the legislative floor in 2026. However, Trump’s recent statements have previously led to the proposal being downvoted. The county’s association with Rochester’s status as a sanctuary city means regardless of whether the county votes, it remains at risk of losing funding if the Trump administration follows through on plans to halt federal money next month.
Trump did not specify which funds would be cut next month. When asked, he responded, “You’ll see.”
