ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert is now posted for the return of some snow and bitterly cold air. The main focus will be the Thursday morning commute, but there is the chance snow may develop by Wednesday night. This is a complicated forecast, with two scenarios: the first has a stronger main area of low pressure developing. In this case, we’ll see a bigger impact from area-wide snow, followed by lake enhancement. The second scenario keeps the area of low pressure much weaker, with a much lower area-wide snowfall threat, but still lake effect snow. We’re highlighting the Thursday morning commute with the Yellow Alert, particularly for our northern tier counties, where Lake Ontario will play more of a role.
In addition to any snow, it’ll be turning bitterly cold with highs falling back through the teens through the day. A brisk wind will drop wind chill values below zero into the afternoon and evening.
If we get area-wide snow, it’ll tend to taper off Thursday morning, but the lake effect will persist into the afternoon, but begin to weaken.
