Another day, another Tyler signed to a minor league.
Yesterday it was journeyman reclamation project Tyler Beede, while this one is more of a true prospect/development-project type:

— Greg Huss (@OutOfTheVines) January 12, 2026Sitting at 95/96 mph with 20 inches of induced vertical will get you signed, even if it’s only a pro day showcase. Didn’t hurt that Tyler Ras, as Greg said, was a Cubs draft pick back in the day, and was working out at Tread Athletics, where Cubs VP of Pitching Tyler Zombro is affiliated. (I’m probably always going to be extra high on the Tread signings for that reason. (Also: another Tyler!))
Ras, 26, was originally a Rockies prospect, but wasn’t able to reach Double-A. He headed off to indy ball in 2024, and returned to affiliated ball with the Astros (Low-A) in 2025. This is a scouting and development play, pure and simple. He’s big (6’4″, 205 lbs), he’s got velo, he’s got spin. You take those bones and see if something clicks with your minor league staff.
Ras joins Jace Beck, Sam Mettert, and the minor league Rule 5 draftees (Zane Mills and Adam Stone) as this type of signing so far this offseason for the Cubs. They aren’t quite guys like Beede or Collin Snider or Jeff Brigham or Corbin Martin, who are competing for bullpen jobs in Spring Training. Instead, they are guys who are more like experienced prospects getting a development shot in a new/different organization. You take a bit of a longer view with these types, and see what you can coax out over the course of the full year or maybe more.
