Ben Johnson is a Master Motivator ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Coming into this season, we knew that Ben Johnson was a superb offensive play-caller. And while we didn’t know if he could thrive as a head coach, it was easy to feel good about his chances when you consider how hot of a candidate he was around the league. But what we didn’t know is that Johnson is a master motivator with a penchant of manipulating situations and creating factors that could fuel players to play their best.

Look no further than how he turned the Packers’ tough talk into bulletin board material:

“There was probably a little bit more noise coming out of their building up north to start the week – which we heard loud and clear -players and coaches alike. So this one meant something to us.”– Ben Johnson on showing more emotion than usual after the game pic.twitter.com/igoXBoFoWC

That Green Bay’s players and coaches couldn’t back up their words with action is something that will get me through the coldest winter nights.

Ben Johnson’s disdain for the Green Bay Packers is exactly what this rivalry needed. We’ve discussed this here and on the podcast, but rivalries can’t exist if there isn’t pushback from the other side. The Bears are finally pushing back with actions that back up their words. It is unlike anything we have seen in this matchup since Brett Favre took over up in Wisconsin. What the Bears did on Saturday reminds me of how the Joe Maddon Cubs stopped letting the St. Louis Cardinals bully them around in 2015. And as was the case with the Cubs, the Bears’ push back against their long-time top antagonist began with a leader who had a little edge to them.

28-3: Ben Johnson’s other motivating tool

The Athletic’s Kevin Fishbain penned one of my favorite postgame stories after Chicago’s win against Green Bay. At the heart of Fishbain’s article is how Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson went deep in his bag to inspire the team’s epic come-from-behind victory. Among the motivating anecdotes was something that happened back in the summer with Johnson showing the team Super Bowl LI — better known as when the New England Patriots erased a 28-3 deficit to take down the Atlanta Falcons in overtime.

During training camp, Johnson showed the team Super Bowl LI, when the New England Patriots came back from a 28-3 deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons, 34-28.

Defensive tackle Grady Jarrett played for the Falcons that day, and guard Joe Thuney played for the Patriots. Johnson had those players speak about their perspectives.

“It’s a good lesson to be learned that you know it’s 28-3 in the middle of the third quarter and yet the game still being played, there’s a lot of time left,” Johnson said Saturday night. “That was my message to the group was just reminding them that this has been done before and rather than saying, ‘Woe is me’ and ‘Crap, we’re in a hole,’ it’s more this is a great opportunity for us to turn this thing around into a game that we’ll never forget, and that’s what he did.”

On its own, that game a wonderful teaching tool that expresses Exhibit A for why one should never give up. But Ben Johnson using guys who played in that game to share their perspectives probably helped drive home the message. And kudos to Jarrett for whatever message he relayed that got through to the team. I can’t imagine talking through my most traumatic sports experience with teammates who are new to me. But I suppose leadership means you have the ability to do that without flinching.

I love that this Bears come-from-behind win against the Packers wasn’t just fueled by some rah-rah halftime speech. Instead, it was rooted in a constant message that has been a sticking point since the offseason. Planting the seeds of a comeback in the January cold way back in the summertime is next-level stuff. And it feels worth noting that Packers coach Matt LaFleur was the Falcons’ quartebacks coach at the time. I’m sure Ben Johnson enjoys knowing that his coaching rival was on the losing end of 28-3 and 21-3.

I’m not sure what tricks Ben Johnson has left up his sleeve, but I can’t wait to find out.
