Monday marked a heartbreaking end to the search for Linda Brown, a Chicago Public Schools’ teacher who had been missing for more than a week.
Brown’s body was recovered along Lake Michigan – not far from where an image of her was captured last week. Hours after the beloved teacher’s body was located, a former student reflected on the impact she had.
“We’re all extremely sad, but we all carry a little piece of her within us,” said Rene Lopez.
Just before noon on Monday, Chicago Police marine units pulled Brown’s body from the 31st Street Harbor, near where she was captured on surveillance camera on Jan. 3. Video showed Brown parking her car around 3 a.m. then walking across the 35th Street pedestrian bridge.
Following her disappearance, a large-search effort took place along the lakefront, in hope of finding any sign of the teacher. Lopez, who said he felt a duty to join the search, remembered the impact Brown had on him and his 15 cousins in the classroom.
“One of her most amazing qualities was that quality of creating a second family,” he said.
After her body was recovered, Brown’s family released a statement, saying, in part: “This is not the outcome we were hoping or praying for, but we are grateful that she has been found and can now be brought home to our family. We want to extend our deepest and most sincere gratitude to everyone who supported us during this unimaginable time…”
Mayor Brandon Johnson, in a statement, said, “As a special education teacher at Healy Elementary, she made an immeasurable impact on countless young lives and was a vital member of the Bridgeport community.”
Brown was on leave from work but scheduled to return soon.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy before releasing a cause of death.
“There’s nothing we can do to bring her back but sharing just a special moment of what she did to impact thousands of students at this point,” Lopez said. “She created a positive impact and that will forever carry on with her legacy.”
