During an interview with Us Weekly backstage at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Jan. 11, the actor hinted at Streep making a comeback — even though her character is dead in the Mamma Mia universe.
“A lot of people are working on it to bring [Mamma Mia!] back,” he added. “She’s not dead, you know! Meryl Streep is not dead!”
All three actors reprised their roles for the 2018 sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, however, Donna was killed off sometime prior to the film's events. In the movie, Streep appears in a dream sequence, while Lily James plays young Donna in flashbacks. Both movies are set to music by Swedish pop group ABBA.
“I’m in the privileged position that I have Universal Studios wanting to do it, who I love working with, and I have a storyline,” Cramer said at the time. “It just always takes a certain amount of time with Mamma Mia! [ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus] always take a certain amount of convincing. I don’t know how much more convincing they’re gonna have because everybody wants another film.”
“It is [happening], I think,” she said. “We all said, 'Yeah, definitely!' It’s our way of marketing and getting support. Movies like that, big movies like that, are all about studio timing.”
“Of course I want to do it,” Streep said at the time. “[But] I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my calendar] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon.”
