The Los Amigos boys basketball team is having another good season.
The Lobos want this to be a great season.
They are 12-7 overall and 1-0 in the Coast League after beating Savanna 64-42 last week.
It’s a senior-led group. Mekhi Belote, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, is averaging team highs of 15 points and six rebounds a game. Another senior guard, 6-5 Philip Steinert, is averaging 14 points and five rebounds and has 978 career points, and 5-7 senior guard Tapusu Lapati is scoring nine points a game.

Lobos coach DeAndre Ferguson likes the way the team has grown and improved.
“Steinert is a great shooter,” said Ferguson, in his fourth season as Los Amigos’ coach. “He can shoot the air out of the ball. Mekhi has had to battle injuries every year and this year he’s finally healthy.”
The Lobos have defeated some solid Orange County teams like Portola and Northwood. They lost to Esperanza, which is 19-1 and No. 17 in The Orange County Top 25, by only three points, 65-62.
Ferguson said it’s an easy group to coach because it’s a self-motivated roster.
“We play hard,” he said, “with a lot of energy and intensity. These kids are fearless.”
Los Amigos shared the Coast League championship with Savanna last season. The Lobos lost at home to Santiago in the first round of last season’s CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs and finished 15-13.
Ferguson anticipates a better ending this season.
“We haven’t peaked yet,” Ferguson said.
The CIF-SS playoffs begin Feb. 11.
