LIVERMORE — Prosecutors in Alameda County have charged a man with attempting to murder two people with a machete in a seemingly random attack, court records show.

Hugo Peraza-Leveron, 25, was charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, for allegedly swinging a machete at two people who told police he appeared to be aiming at their necks. The victims told police that at around 2:18 a.m. on Dec. 27 Peraza-Leveron approached them a home on the 3600 block of Cross Road, causing dogs to bark. When the residents went outside to inspect, he allegedly swung at them “without provocation,” police said in court records.

Peraza-Leveron allegedly told the victims he had shot a man in Pleasanton just three days earlier, on Christmas Eve, but that shooting remains under investigation. He has not been charged and authorities appear to be looking at a different man as a person of interest, according to court records.

Peraza-Leveron was arrested about two hours after the attack, still in possession of the machete, authorities said. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on Jan. 15, court records show.
