A 39-year-old Lincoln Park man will make his first court appearance Monday after being charged with the Ohio murders of his ex-wife and her current husband.
Michael McKee, 39, was booked Saturday and is currently being held in Rockford, according to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. He is alleged to have shot and killed the couple, Dr. Spencer Tepe, a 37-year-old dentist, and Monique Tepe, 39, in their Columbus home. There were no county court records in Ohio reflecting whether McKee has an attorney yet.
Detectives identified McKee through neighborhood video surveillance, according to an arrest warrant. He was then linked to a vehicle that detectives say arrived just prior to the crime and left shortly after.
According to officials, McKee was tracked down in Rockford and arrested Saturday. He is expected to appear in court at 1:30 p.m.
What we know about the victims
Monique and Spencer Tepe married in 2020, according to the couple’s obituary.
Family members described the Tepes as extraordinary people and proud parents with joy-filled lives. Monique Tepe was a caring and bubbly stay-at-home mother, and Spencer Tepe was passionate about dentistry and taking care of his family. The couple hosted many gatherings of family and friends.
In a statement, the Tepe family called the arrest “an important step toward justice for Monica and Spencer.”
“Nothing can undo the devastating loss of two lives taken far too soon, but we are grateful to the City of Columbus Police Department, its investigators, and assisting law enforcement community whose tireless efforts helped to capture the person involved,” the statement read in part. “Monique and Spencer remain at the center of our hearts, and we carry forward their love as we surround and protect the two children they leave behind. We will continue to honor their lives and the light they brought into this world.”
What is known about Michael McKee
McKee and Monique Tepe married in 2015 and filed for divorce two years later, according to records from the Franklin County Clerk of Courts.
According to NBC News, McKee and Tepe share no children together.
NBC News reports McKee is a medical doctor specializing in vascular surgery, according to online license records. He is licensed in California and Illinois, and was previously licensed in Nevada, but that license expired in June, the report said.
He was listed as a vascular surgeon at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, NBC News reported. The hospital did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for comment.
How the killings unfolded
Dispatchers first received calls of concern, including from Spencer Tepe’s boss, when he didn’t show up for work, which the boss said was “out of character.” Columbus police discovered the Tepes on the second floor of their home on Dec. 30 with gunshot wounds when officers conducted a wellness check. Their two young children, ages 1 and 4, were in the home and unharmed, police said.
Authorities received at least four calls concerning the Tepes starting around 9 a.m. on Dec. 30, police said. The first call came from the owner of Spencer’s dental practice, who told the operator that he is never late to work and always checks in before missing a day.
An hour later, an unidentified man called 911 from outside the couple’s home and said he could hear children inside but could not get in. Another friend of Spender’s reported to authorities they saw a body inside the house before breaking down into sobs.
“There’s blood. He’s laying next to his bed, off of his bed, and there’s blood. I can’t get closer to see more than that,” he said, according to 911 logs.
Three 9-millimeter casings were found inside the home, according to the police report.
