With the Harbaugh situation unfolding, Albert Breer of TheMMQB said that the Packers will have to decide whether to pony up more money to re-sign LaFleur, or to go in a different direction.
“The Packers have been steadfast in Matt LaFleur’s corner – but the question now will be at what price,” Breer said.
Before Saturday’s game against the Bears, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said that LaFleur and the Packers could start talking contract extension now that the season has wrapped up.
“I’m told the Packers and LaFleur shortly after the season are expected to meet on extending his contract,” he said.
Whatever happens with LaFleur, it will have cascading impacts on the rest of the NFL. If he stays, it keeps Harbaugh in play and teams will likely launch a bidding war to land his services. If the Packers part ways with LaFleur, it would likely signal a desire to bring Harbaugh to Lambeau Field, fundamentally reshaping the Packers’ leadership structure in what has become a rough and tumble NFC North division.
