ALBANY, N.Y. — The family of Robert Brooks, who died after being beaten by corrections officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in 2024, is expected to return to the Capitol on Monday. This comes as the final trial related to his death is set to begin.
Body camera footage showed Brooks being beaten by prison staff. His children, siblings, and father will join lawmakers and advocates to call for ongoing reforms across New York’s prison system.
Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the Robert Brooks Prison Reform Bill last month. The bill expands the use of cameras and increases reporting and investigative powers when a death occurs in the prison system.
“I don’t think my father would ever believe this would be going on, today as we speak,” said Robert Brooks Jr. “To have that ultimate sacrifice of what he had to go through, to change what’s going on now, I think he would be happy with that.”
The family said they are back in Albany to “continue the fight” as jury selection in Brooks’ final related case gets underway. Michael Fisher is charged with manslaughter.
