The Chicago Bears were down 21-3 at halftime, but they once again made history as they captured a 31-27 victory over the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field.
Caleb Williams threw for 361 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including the game-winning score to DJ Moore with just under two minutes left in regulation as the Bears won a playoff game for the first time in 15 years.
The comeback win was the largest the Bears have ever scored over the Packers, and marks only the fourth time in NFL history a team has won a playoff game when trailing by 15 points or more.
Jordan Love threw for three touchdown passes in the first half of the game and had four overall, but Williams and the Bears scored 25 points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
The Bears’ offense took the ball to start the game, and they killed off nearly eight minutes of clock, but only came away with three points, as Cairo Santos booted through a 27-yard field goal to give Chicago a 3-0 lead.
The Packers’ offense immediately went to work on their opening drive, and they rampaged down the field on a scoring drive. The possession was capped by a Love touchdown pass to Christian Watson, giving Green Bay a 7-3 lead.
On a 4th-and-6 from the Packers’ 40-yard line, Williams threw an interception, and the Packers put together an 87-yard touchdown drive that was finished off with another Love touchdown pass to Jayden Reed to make it a 14-3 game.
Another turnover on downs for the Bears gave the ball pack to the Packers, and this time it was Romeo Doubs doing the honors, scoring on a one-yard play on fourth down to give the Packers a 21-3 lead that they would carry into halftime.
The Packers’ offense was finally stopped a few times in the third quarter, but the Bears were forced to settle for a field goal after their first drive stalled out at the 16-yard line. They then took another field goal early in the fourth quarter, making it 21-9 with 13:29 remaining in the contest.
After forcing yet another punt, the Bears put together their best drive of the game, capped off by a touchdown run by D’Andre Swift that cut the deficit to 21-16 with 10 minutes remaining.
Suddenly, the Packers’ offense found their stride again as the fourth quarter rolled along, with Doubs hauling in a 22-yard catch and another nine-yard catch on third down to give the Packers good field position. Matthew Golden then broke multiple tackles on a 23-yard scamper to the end zone, putting the Packers back in front by a score of 27-16 with six and a half minutes remaining.
The Bears once again faced a fourth down on their ensuing drive, but Williams threw on the run and managed to find Rome Odunze for an improbable connection, putting the Bears within field goal range. He then found Kyle Monangai for a huge third-and-10 conversion to get the team back within the red zone.
Williams completed the drive with a touchdown pass to Olamide Zaccheaus with 4:18 remaining in the game, and Williams ripped home a pass to Colston Loveland for the two-point conversion, cutting Green Bay’s lead to 27-24 in the late stages.
Like they’ve done so many times this season, the Bears managed to stun the Soldier Field crowd and scored a touchdown with less than two minutes remaining, as DJ Moore hauled in a 25-yard pass to give the Bears a 31-27 lead.
On fourth down in Packers’ territory, Love found Golden for a 13-yard completion to keep Green Bay’s hopes alive. Doubs then caught a pass on third down to get the Packers into Bears’ territory with 44 seconds remaining in the game.
The Packers ultimately had a 10-second runoff after an injury, and Love’s final pass fell incomplete in the end zone as the Bears captured the win.
Now, the Bears will wait to see who they’ll play in the second round, as they’ll face either the Los Angeles Rams or Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field next weekend.
