A man climbing near Black Star Canyon Falls on Saturday, Jan. 10, was in critical condition and needed helicopter rescue from the remote area following a fall.
The victim, whose name wasn’t immediately available, fell while trying to climb in the area at about 2 p.m., said Greg Barta, fire captain and public information officer for the Orange County Fire Authority.
Strong winds made the high-risk rescue by the OCFA Air Operations team challenging.

“Battling extreme wind conditions, one of our highly skilled pilots maneuvered one of our new FIREHAWK helicopters to lower two rescue medics into position, maintain a steady hover in challenging conditions, and safely hoist both the medic and patient to safety,” reads a video posted by OCFA. “The mission didn’t end there. While airborne, our crews provided critical, lifesaving medical care as the patient, who was in critical condition, was transported to a local trauma center.”
Black Star Canyon waterfall has been posted on several social media sites in recent days following several storms that brought big rain to the region, fueling the falls. It sits in a remote area of the county, between Silverado and Santiago Canyon.
