By winning the first two conference games, Colorado showed it will be a much more competitive group than the one that struggled through the Big 12 last year.
Texas Tech tried to show the Buffaloes they still have a ways to go in order to compete with the league’s best. CU eventually fell short, but not before putting a monumental scare into the Red Raiders.
The 14th-ranked Red Raiders topped the Buffaloes on Saturday, holding off a furious CU rally in the second half to hand the Buffs a 73-71 defeat at the CU Events Center. The Buffs trailed by 24 early in the second half but had a chance to win at the end. However, a 3-point attempt from Barrington Hargress at the buzzer was off target.
It as the Buffs’ ninth consecutive loss against an Associated Press Top 25 team, and their sixth consecutive home loss against a ranked foe. That’s the program’s longest streak of home losses against ranked teams since CU lost six straight during the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons.
Colorado put together a solid start, making five of its first seven shots on the way to an early 16-9 lead. The Buffs still led 18-14 when the Red Raiders took over, outscoring the Buffs 29-9 over the remainder of the first half to take a 43-27 lead at the break.
Texas Tech stretched its lead to 24 points early in the second half before the Buffs rallied, reeling off a 21-3 run that cut the deficit to just six points with 6 minutes, 15 seconds remaining.
The Red Raiders answered with five straight points, re-establishing an 11-point lead. CU again got within five points on a pair of free throws by Isaiah Johnson with 55.2 seconds remaining, and the Buffs forced a Texas Tech turnover in the backcourt of the subsequent inbounds. Sebastian Rancik hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to two points, and the Buffs forced another stop before Hargress’ late attempt at a game-winner went awry.
Johnson finished 13-for-13 at the free throw line and led the Buffs with 21 points, while Hargress finished with 17.
CU (12-4, 2-1 Big 12) played without freshman reserve guard Jalin Holland, who was sidelined due to an injury.
