News by : (inews) -

Protests in Iran show no signs of ending after two weeks of civil unrest againast the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest the economic hardship they have experienced under the authoritarian regime.

As demonstrators light fires and block roads, US president Donald Trump has said he will support their resistance against the regime.

Iran’s supreme leader has plunged citizens into an internet blackout after pulling the plug on Thursday.

What is the situation on the ground?

As demonstrations sweep across dozens of cities in Iran, at least 65 protestors have been reportedly killed in the chaos – 100 have also been arrested.

What started as action in Tehran’s bazaars over inflation has quickly exploded, with protests becoming a vehicle to express general anger at the regime.

According to the US-based Human Rights Activists New Agency, the highest number of casualties are in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Ilam, Kermanshah, and Fars.

Hospitals are reportedly at breaking point as there are unable to cope with the number of people arriving with injuries.

According to the BBC, an eye hospital in Tehran has gone into crisis mode whilst another hospital in the capital simply does not have enough surgeons to cope with the injuries.

The protests of the last fortnight are the largest since 2022, and involve people from more than 100 cities.

According to Fars news agency, which is affiliated with the Iranian state, 950 police officers have been injured in confrontations with protesters.

The Norway-based Iran Human Rights NGO has said that more than 2,000 people have been detained by the authorities.

Internet access was cut off on Thursday, and the blackout maintained throughout Friday. The phone system was also out of action and airlines cancelled flights in and out of the country.

What has Trump said?

Donald Trump has warned Iran that the US will intervene if they enact violence against the protestors.

“You better not start shooting because we’ll start shooting too”, Trump told Tehran this week.

He said during a US radio interview on Thursday: “I have let them know that if they start killing people, which they tend to do during their riots … we’re going to hit them very hard”

The US President bombed Iran in June and has not ruled out further military action.

“I just hope the protesters in Iran are going to be safe, because that’s a very dangerous place right now,” Trump added.

Ali Khamenei

Khamenei has labelled protesters “troublemakers” and claimed that the demonstrations are a plot by foreign enemies to topple the regime.

He said demonstrators were trying “to please the president of the US” and warned that his authorities would not back down.
