Egypt on Friday emphasized the importance of moving to the next phase of arrangements in the Gaza Strip, including the announcement of forming a temporary Palestinian technocratic committee to manage the daily affairs of citizens, and establishing an international stabilization force.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty briefed the European Union Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šucic, during a phone call on Friday, on the latest developments regarding various regional issues and Egypt’s efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
The minister reviewed the efforts being made to ensure the flow of sufficient aid and to create the necessary environment for the start of early recovery and reconstruction.
Abdelatty stressed the rejection of any practices that would undermine the unity of the Palestinian territories or divide Gaza Strip.
Second phase of ceasefire
Former UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, held several meetings on Friday with Palestinian and Israeli officials regarding the details of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire, coinciding with his announcement as the newly appointed director of the Gaza Peace Council.
Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh received Mladenov at his office in Ramallah on Friday.
During the meeting, Sheikh reiterated the priorities of Palestine’s position, which include consolidating the ceasefire, immediately delivering urgent aid, the necessity of beginning the implementation of the second phase of President Trump’s plan, and ensuring Israel’s total withdraw from the Gaza Strip.
Mladenov met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, wherein Herzog’s office reported that the meeting addressed political developments related to post-war arrangements and the expected role of the Peace Council in overseeing a transitional phase in the Gaza Strip.
On Thursday, Mladenov also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu’s office stated that the prime minister insisted on two fundamental conditions – the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarization of Gaza.
