San Diego FC is parting ways with star forward Hirving “Chucky” Lozano after just one season, general manager Tyler Heaps said Friday.
“We have communicated with Hirving and his representatives that he will not be part of the (team’s) plans moving forward,” Heaps revealed during a media scrum. “That was not a decision that was taken lightly, that was something that was well talked through from owners down to leadership, down to myself and (head coach) Mikey (Varas), and has beencommunicated with the rest of the group.
“We’re working with him and his representatives to find the best solution and the best environment for him moving forward,” he continued.
Lozano is signed through the 2028 season.
The move, while likely disappointing to Lozano’s fans in San Diego, was not unexpected.
A high profile player who was one of the five highest paid footballers in the league last year at $7.6 million, Lozano was suspended and then benched after a locker room incident in which he became angry after being benched at halftime of an October regular season match against Houston Dynamo FC.
After details of the incident were leaked to the media, Lozano issued an apology stating that he realized he hadn’t reacted the right way to the situation and that he had “taken responsibility, addressed it and moved forward.”
However, he still sat out two consecutive matches before entering a playoff game off the bench against the Portland Timbers. Lozano never regained his starting role and came off the bench the remainder of the playoffs.
Despite the benching and even though he missed a handful of games due to a lingering hamstring injury, Lozano was still one of SDFC’s most productive players in 2025, with nine goals and nine assists in 27 regular season appearances (22 starts), plus two goals and an assist in the playoffs.
These were the second-best numbers on the expansion club, behind MVP candidate Anders Dreyer, who had 19 goals and 18 assists in 34 regular season games (all starts), and another four goals and two assists in five playoff matches.
In addition to friction with the coaching staff, Lozano, 30, dealt with injuries during the season, starting with the club’s first-ever home match on March 1 when he had to leave in the first half due to a left hamstring issue. He also missed time with Mexico’s national team last summer due to hamstring injuries.
His being in and out of the lineup and then coming off the bench late in the season didn’t negatively affect SDFC, as it had the best record in the Western Conference in 2025.
“Our focus is always on the collective,” Varas said following the announcement of Lozano’s departure. “It’s about pushing the team chemistry this year. We’ve played plenty of games without him (in the lineup) and that team played very, very well.”
SDFC has made a handful of other moves this offseason, including trading a draft pick to the New York Red Bulls for productive, but injury-prone midfielder Lewis Morgan, 29.
Morgan, a Scotland native who was with the Red Bulls for four seasons, is a winger who only played in three matches during the 2025 season due to knee and quad injuries. He scored 13 goals in 29 appearances for NY the year before.
