ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Strong winds were expected to impact flight operations at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport on Friday. News10NBC spoke with the airport’s director, Andy Moore, about the potential effects on departures and arrivals.
Moore said the weather would likely affect departures more than arrivals. He said between 4 p.m. and about 7 p.m. on Friday, when winds are forecasted to be the highest, the airport has more flights taking off than landing.
Moore explained that pilots have the final say in their flight plans. If a pilot does not feel comfortable landing or taking off in this weather, they’ll let air traffic control know they need to divert to another airport or take another lap.
The airport was preparing for the weather by ensuring the airfield and ramp areas were secure.
“What we try to do with our airfield crews is make sure that the airfield and the ramp area where the planes are parked are as clean as can be, and everything’s locked down as tight as can be,” said Moore.
Moore went on to say that preparation for such weather events starts 24 to 48 hours in advance. The airport has about 20 people on the ground constantly monitoring runway conditions.
Moore reminded travelers that any cancellations or delays are up to the airline, not the airport. He recommended using an airline app for the quickest updates on flight statuses.
