Greeley police have recommended charges, including careless driving resulting in death, against a driver they believe caused a U.S. 85 crash in Greeley that resulted in the death of a 5-year-old girl.
Maribel Zavala, 24, also faces charges of left turn in front of approaching traffic, driving under restraint, no proof of insurance and no seat belt, according to the release.
Initial investigations found that a Ford Focus, driven by Zavala, was going northbound on U.S. 85 on Dec. 29 when she attempted to turn left onto 22nd Street and hit a southbound Tesla on U.S. 85, according to a Greeley Police Department news release. The force of the crash sent both vehicles spinning into a semitruck that was stopped at the intersection.
First responders initiated life-saving measures for a 5-year-old passenger in the Ford. The girl was taken to a Denver hospital in critical condition, but she died from her injuries. Neither the Tesla driver nor the semitruck driver was injured. Zavala had minor injuries.
