By striking one of Ukraine’s major cities with a hypersonic ballistic missile overnight on Thursday, Vladimir Putin wasn’t just warning the Ukrainians that he can still escalate his war, he was also reminding Donald Trump not to push Russia too far.
Putin seems to have a fascination with “wonder weapons”, from the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile to the Poseidon atomic drone-torpedo. However, the Oreshnik is probably the most technologically mature of these systems, as it is the first to be brought into active service.
It is, above all, characterised by its speed, being able to reach ten times the speed of sound – or more than 7,500mph – as it arcs down on its target, before releasing six independently-targeted warheads. These can be nuclear, but the two used so far have carried kinetic submunitions: smaller, solid rounds that rely on mass and above all speed to penetrate and destroy.
Until yesterday, the Oreshnik had only been used once, in November 2024. Then, a single missile was used in a demonstrative strike against the Pivdenmash missile plant in Dnipro, in eastern Ukraine. Last night, a second one was used against Lviv, in what Russia is framing as retaliation for an alleged attempted drone strike on Putin’s residence at Valdai late last month.
Kyiv has denied the attack took place, although a CIA report did suggest that a strike had been launched against a different target in the same region.
Whether Moscow genuinely believes Ukraine was going after Putin, or is simply mobilising this for propaganda reasons, is unclear, but having made the claim, it needed to make some performative response.
