Alabama women’s basketball stuns No. 6 Kentucky at home ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

The unranked Alabama women’s basketball team pulled off a major upset over No. 6 Kentucky Thursday night, 64-51.

The effort was led by guard Jessica Timmons, who had 24 points, 4 rebounds and a pair of assists.

After a sluggish offensive start to the contest by both teams, the Wildcats started to find their groove, putting together an 8-0 run to take a 9-2 lead with 4:55 left in the first. Conversely, the Crimson Tide’s offensive attack looked discombobulated, with many early possessions resulting in last-second heaves late in the shot clock.

However, guard Karly Weathers believed she and her team were in just the right position.

“We felt like we were in a pretty good position. We had gotten shots. Shots just weren’t falling,” she said. “We knew that if we could control more on the defensive end of the floor and get more stops that things were gonna happen.”

After a media timeout, Alabama’s offense came alive with a 10-0 run to give the team a 12-11 lead with 1:30 left in the first.

“I think we got off to a slow start,” head coach Kristy Curry said. “But, I thought as the game went, we understood the execution of the game plan.”

The second quarter belonged to the Crimson Tide.

Coleman Coliseum was set ablaze by the team’s second-quarter performance. Alabama outscored Kentucky 21-13 in the frame, led primarily by the 12 points scored by guard Jessica Timmons.

“We’re very appreciative of the crowd because they brought a lot of energy,” Timmons said.

In addition to great play by Timmons and the offense, the defense brought all kinds of juice. The team forced eight second-quarter turnovers and had a pair of blocks en route to a 36-29 halftime lead.

The third quarter featured the same defensive presence as Alabama only allowed Kentucky to score 9 points and took a 55-38 lead into the final frame of what was primed to be a huge upset.

The Crimson Tide continued to dominate in the fourth, outscoring the Wildcats 7-1 in the first 6 minutes.

As the waning seconds melted off the Jumbotron inside Coleman, fans rose to their feet, saluting the shocking upset of the No. 6 team in the nation.

“I’m so glad our crowd got to see those kids play their guts out for them,” Curry said. “Just a tremendous amount of energy in the building.”

After the game, Curry praised the team’s culture and will in bringing home the victory.

“Their will is incredibly special,” she said. “Their will has to be stronger than their skill; they understand that. I’ve said this all along, and it’s not cliche: culture doesn’t graduate.”

When asked about a potential postgame celebration in the team’s locker room, all three players giggled before Timmons collected herself to say that they’re “onto the next game” and that they would “enjoy this” before getting “back at it.”

Alabama’s next game will be against Missouri on the road on Monday. The contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on SEC Network.
