Police in suburban Cicero are investigating after a Morton East student was shot and killed Thursday.
According to officials at the school, the shooting occurred just after dismissal near the intersection of 21st Street and 59th Avenue Thursday afternoon.
A 17-year-old student was injured by gunfire, and was taken to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to police.
That location is approximately one-half mile from the school.
Circumstances of the shooting are still being investigated, with Cicero police and Morton East officials coordinating on the investigation.
Officials at the school have said there have been erroneous reports about details of the shooting, and cautioned the public to not spread false information.
“We are aware that there are many reports circulating on social media that are inaccurate. We ask that everyone please refrain from sharing unverified information at this time and rely only on official updates,” the school said in a statement.
According to officials, a crisis team will be available for students and staff at the school on Friday in the aftermath of the shooting.
