Nick Viall’s wife, Natalie Joy, raised eyebrows over her interview with Southern Charm star Austen Kroll — including from his costars.
“Going into your childhood, I didn’t know this about your sister passing at 9,” Natalie, 26, said during the first 10 minutes of Wednesday, January 7, episode of “The Viall Files” podcast. “You obviously don’t have to answer, but my question [is] how old were you when that happened?”
Austen’s older sister, Kyle, died when they were children during a family hike, which Natalie tried to ask him about on Wednesday. After Instagram account “Besties by Caitlin” subsequently recapped the episode, Austen’s Southern Charm costar Rodrigo Reyes fired back at Natalie for broaching the sensitive topic in the comments section.
“She’s a POS,” Rodrigo, 41, replied.

The Valley personality Kristen Doute, for her part, “liked” the original upload, while other social media users condemned Natalie for insensitively asking Austen about his sister’s death.
“Wow. Sure he’s talked about it on the show but on his own terms,” one Instagram user wrote. “Seems wild to bring it up in such a cavalier way with zero sensitivity.”
Others, meanwhile, pointed out that Austen appeared uncomfortable discussing his late sister.
“That was so hard to watch. Austin’s body language said it all,” another social media user wrote, with a third adding, “She’s a mother! She should have more empathy from that standpoint.”
During the interview, Austen, now 38, responded to Natalie’s questions, noting that he was 7 years old when his older sister died.
“How did your family keep y’all together?” Natalie later asked.
Austen answered Natalie’s question in one word, “Katie,” referring to his younger sister.

“Katie came to our family and was the biggest blessing that the Kroll family could have ever gotten,” he continued. “Our story is very interesting because it’s like, if my older sister, Kyle, were still here, then my younger sister, Katie, wouldn’t be here. It was literally a cause and effect, and so it is very interesting because we look back, of course, with the fondest [memories] … and [our] family cries together.”
According to Austen, the period between Kyle’s death and Katie’s birth were “truly like the dark ages” to their family.
“Then, my youngest sister came around and … was born and that quite literally was like our family rebirth,” he said. “We moved into a new house and it was, like, life could begin again.”
Moments later, Natalie asked Austen whether he was present when Kyle fell to her death.

“Were you there when she fell?” Natalie questioned the Bravo star. When he responded affirmatively, she then asked, “What was this cliff?”
Austen, who was noticeably bouncing his leg at the time, briefly answered the question.
“See, to talk about the town, it just got wiped off the map by a hurricane and there was no love lost with my family on that one,” he stated. “I won’t even say the name of the town … but there was no love lost with it and, yeah, I don’t know.”
Neither Nick or Natalie, who welcomed daughter River in 2024, have publicly addressed the interview backlash. Us Weekly has reached out to reps for comment.
