CCB Plaza in downtown Durham began to fill up with protesters just before dark. Many of them chanted protest slogans and carried signs condemning the shooting death of Good, as well as President Trump’s invasion of Venezuela and what they believe are the president’s attacks on democracy.
Sharon Jamison attended the rally to protest ICE, whom she contends is “kidnapping and murdering” people. Jamison said she hopes the protest in Durham and others across the country will eventually bring change.
“The hope is that over time, with enough protests, we can take momentum into the midterm elections and really flip things around and vote people out who are anti-democracy,” Jamison said.
“She [Good] was a defender of immigrant rights. She was a mother,” said Alex Trejo, an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation. “She was killed, murdered by an ICE agent named Jonathan Ross. The video evidence confirms this was a cold-blooded killing,”
Trejo said any claim that Ross acted in self-defense is an “outrageous lie.” He said Democratic leaders must aggressively pursue justice.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has alleged Good refused a command to get out of her vehicle before she tried to run over and kill Ross. Noem contends Good committed an act of “domestic terrorism” and is backing Ross’ decision to shoot and kill her.
Noem’s account of the shooting has been disputed by Minneapolis officials and Gov. Tim Walz, as well as by many media organizations who have reviewed several videos of the encounter by observers and bystanders.
The shooting death in Minneapolis comes amid ramped up immigration enforcement actions in the city. The Trump administration has targeted Somali Americans, whom he has said are “destroying” the country. He has deployed 2,000 federal agents to the city in the wake of alleged fraud by members of the Somali community.
North Carolina was also recently targeted by DHS for immigration enforcement, resulting in more than 100 arrests and sparking protests by immigrant advocates.
Poet Williams, director of Durham Beyond Policing, a grassroots campaign to divest from policing and prisons, said he has grown tired of law enforcement killings.
“It sickens me in the deepest part of my spirit each and every time one of us becomes a new hashtag or headline,” Williams said. “Where does the cycle end?
