A young man from Romeoville was killed in a high-speed crash on I-55 Thursday morning that prompted the closure of several lanes on the interstate for roughly 4 hours.
Around 4:30 a.m., a 3-vehicle crash occurred on I-55 near Illinois Route 126. A red Ford Fusion, driven by 20-year-old Jonathan Wenzel, was traveling westbound on Frontage Road when he crashed through the I-55 sound barrier wall and came to a rest on northbound I-55, authorities said.
Two vehicles traveling north on the interstate than crashed into Wenzel’s vehicle on I-55, authorities said.
Wenzel was pronounced dead on scene, authorities said.
A person in one of the other vehicles was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Frontage Road and lanes on I-55 were closed until approximately 12:25 p.m as authorities investigated.
Huge traffic backups with long stretches of sitting vehicles were shown in photos and video from the scene captured by NBC 5 photographer Joe Amigleo. Multiple emergency vehicles also responded to the scene, which appeared to extend into Plainfield.
Aerial footage from NBC Chicago Sky 5 showed a large hole in the barrier with debris scattered throughout the area, along with authorities investigating.
A Romeoville resident named Seham who lives near the crash location said her husband heard TK’s car crash through the concrete barrier near Taylor and Frontage Roads.
“We thought someone ran into the fence and our fence, and we looked out. Everything was looking fine from here, but we seen, like, 10 or 11 cop cars out here,” she told NBC Chicago.
Seham said several crashes have previously occurred in the same exact spot where TK’s car went through the wall.
“They don’t notice there’s a turn, they be speeding,” she said. “I hope people be careful down there.”
An investigation into the crash remains ongoing, however, police said initial evidence indicates speed was a contributing factor.
