New York State finalist Abby Hendershot has sent her verbal commitment to Sacred Heart University for the fall of 2026.

Hendershot is currently a senior at Bayport Blue Point High School in Bayport New York, and she is a member of the swim team there.
At the 2025 NYPSHAA Girls State Championships in November, she finished 16th in the girls’ 100 freestyle, touching in 53.83 in the final. She had just set a new personal best time in prelims of 53.54 to qualify 13th overall.
She also set a personal best in the 50 freestyle of 24.74 to finish 24th in prelims before coming in at 24.82 to finish 26th in the final.
Hendershot has not swum any club meets since June of 2024, but while she did compete club, she raced for the QNS Aquatic Club.

50 free — 24.74 100 free — 53.54 200 free — 1:57.52Sacred Heart is a Division I school that competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). At the 2025 MAAC Championships in February, the women’s team finished 4th, coming in a little more than 100 points behind Marist with 406 points to Marist’s 511.
Her 50 and 100 free times are close to scoring at the conference championships, with her 50 free sitting about half-a-second behind the 24.25 it took to earn a finals swim and her 100 free coming in a second off the 16th place time of 52.54.
On the Sacred Heart team, she would currently sit in 4th in the 50 free, 3rd in the 100 free, and 3rd in the 200 free, making her a potential relay contender as a freshman.
She will join Elizabeth Melchionni, Lily Orlando, and Nicole Palei on campus in the fall.
