With a roster loaded with underclassmen, the Resurrection Christian hockey team is building for the future while continuing to pursue success this year.
Near the midpoint of the 2025-26 season, the Cougars are 2-7 following an 11-0 loss to Denver East on Wednesday at the NoCo Ice Center in Windsor. All seven of the team’s losses have come against the current top six teams in Class 5A.
“We’ve had our ups and downs,” first-year RCS head coach Tyler Weber said. “Consistency is a big thing, but I think once we play as a team and figure out that we can play as a team with all the big, scary Denver schools, this team gels. Then it’s all about just making sure we’re in the game and ready to go.”
While Weber is the team’s new head coach on the bench, he is not new to the program. He was a member of the Cougars’ 2012-13 team that advanced to the state semifinals.
Weber replaces Cal Miller, also a former Cougar, who coached the team for one season last year before becoming the program’s general manager and president.
Despite Weber being the team’s third head coach in the past three seasons, the team has welcomed the change.
“I was really, really excited,” RCS junior captain Trace Boersma said. “New opportunity, just a new experience for the team. Maybe we could turn something around from the season last year.”
Last year, the Cougars went 7-10-2 and missed the playoffs for the second season in a row. It was an improvement from the 3-15 record the 2023-2024 team finished with.
After a large senior class graduated following last season, this year’s squad features only a handful of them. Weber said the team has five seniors, five juniors and the rest are freshmen and sophomores. The team also features players from not only Resurrection Christian, but other Thompson School District schools, along with Eaton, Greeley and Severance.
“We’ve got a young team, mostly freshmen and sophomores, but a pretty skilled group,” Boersma said.
Freshman Cullen Leffler leads the team with five goals. Of the 13 goals the team has scored this season, only two have been by seniors.
Having a young roster lends itself to building for the future, and that is what the Cougars are doing. While ending a two-year playoff drought this season is the team’s short-term goal, the long-term outlook includes becoming a top team consistently like the program was in its early years.
Weber refers to the team’s progression not only for the remainder of this season but into the future with his young team as building blocks.
“Just adding building blocks every single game that you can,” he said. “We have the potential to go out there and compete in any game. That’s one thing that I talk to my assistant coach (about). I just want to go out and compete in every game, regardless of the score.
“Obviously winning is always fun, but as a first-year head coach with a young team, it’s hard to expect perfection right away. But just going out there and giving our effort 100% and just going out there and trying to grind out games, we’re adding blocks. Sometimes it’s a little bit heavier blocks, but you have to add that foundation first to every pyramid.”
The Cougars take each game as a learning tool as well. While they have taken some losses this season, they have had several positive experiences, specifically in their victories over Dakota Ridge and Grandview.
With almost half the season remaining, the Cougars believe they are building something despite what their record might indicate. Even after being shut out for the sixth time this season Wednesday, the team continues to learn each time on the ice.
“I feel like we’ve had our ups and downs as a team,” Boersma said. “But one of the main things that brings us together as a team is the fellowship and the faith that we stand for at Resurrection Christian, and it’s just a great experience. We learn a lot as a team, and although you never want to see that score (11-0) on the scoreboard, I just feel like it can bring us closer together or further apart, and on this team, I believe it just brings us closer to each other.”
The Cougars will be back on the ice Saturday when they face Monarch at the Greeley Ice Haus.
