Ayo Dosunmu on Bears-Packers, Kendall Gill Goes Full Karnisovas, and Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

Our Chicago Bulls find themselves in the midst of another losing streak.

Chicago has now dropped three straight after getting thoroughly waxed on Wednesday, 108-93, by a Detroit Pistons club missing starters Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, and Tobias Harris.

The 17-20 Bulls are hoping to stop the bleeding when they return to the United Center on Thursday. They’ll face the similarly mid Miami Heat (20-17) on the second night of a back-to-back.

Bulls Bullets — January 8, 2026

After tonight’s clash against the Miami Heat, the Bulls will play one more game this week, a Saturday encounter with the lowly Dallas Mavericks. Unfortunately for native Chicagoans Ayo Dosunmu and Matas Buzelis, that bout will directly overlap with the Bears’ opening playoff tilt against the Green Bay Packers. And yes, Rome Odunze is planning to play. Dosunmu relayed his disappointment about the scheduling conflict to Evanston native K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network.

"Yeah man, I have to see you instead of seeing my Bears."Ayo Dosunmu, a big Bears fan, had jokes when @KCJHoop asked him about having to play during the Bears-Packers game this Saturday night ? pic.twitter.com/zJfirGUWCe

— Bulls on CHSN (@CHSN_Bulls) January 7, 2026 “Yeah, man, I have to see you instead of seeing my Bears,” Dosunmu joked, per Johnson. Dosunmu is “possibly the biggest Bears fan on the team,” Johnson claimed. Both games kick off at 7 p.m. Mavericks All-Star Anthony Davis, a Chicago native but an avowed Packers fan, will also likely be bummed to miss out. Kendall Gill had a weirdly disingenuous (but very Arturas Karnisovas-coded) reaction to the Pistons’ loss. While recapping the game on the Chicago Sports Network’s postgame studio show, he cited the Bulls’ lack of healthy bodies as the reason the team ran out of steam in the fourth quarter, during which Chicago was outscored 32-16. Gill also claimed that, had the Bulls been healthy, they would have beaten the Boston Celtics on Monday. The Bulls were missing starting point guard Josh Giddey and backup bigs Jalen Smith and Zach Collins for both bouts, while being without shooting guard Coby White for one. So… did Kendall Gill not notice who wasn’t available for Detroit or Boston? Again, the Pistons were down three starters, including their two best players in likely 2026 All-Stars Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren. The Celtics, meanwhile, have been winning without their best player, six-time All-Star Jayson Tatum, the entire season. Could a healthy Bulls team have taken down the injured Pistons and Celtics squads? Possibly, sure. But it wouldn’t change the fact that, if everyone were hypothetically available for both matchups in an unrealistic fantasyland, this guard-heavy, anti-defense Bulls roster would still lose both games. Chicago is doomed for yet another play-in tournament exit. If Karnisovas once again blames injuries for his team’s sixth consecutive mid-to-bad season, the Reinsdorfs need to step up and pack his bags. Honestly, they could have done that a year ago, and we would have been happy. Gill’s contention that the fully healthy Bulls could have beaten this injured Pistons club also gives me pause. Chicago couldn’t even stop rookie second-round draft pick Chaz Lanier, who poured in eight points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field (including two game-changing treys) while only playing in the fourth quarter. Without Smith or Collins available behind Nikola Vucevic, Chicago gave Isaiah Stewart a layup line in the post. Lachlan Olbrich needed to play first-quarter minutes. Vucevic and Olbrich’s atrocious defense against an undersized big led to Stewart notching a career-high 31 points on 14-of-17 shooting from the field and 1-of-2 shooting from the free-throw line. Also, Chicago enjoyed a 29-11 fastbreak edge on Wednesday, but the Pistons massacred the Bulls in paint scoring, 62-48. You could call this the Nikola Vucevic Effect. Say what you will about the guy’s consistent availability, solid 3-point shooting, volume rebounding, and passing — he’s a plodding defender at best and an embarrassing liability on that end at worst. If Karnisovas signs the 35-year-old impending free agent to another three-year, $60 million deal this summer, somebody please gouge my eyes out? He needs to go. Vucevic, in true “We’re all trying to find the guy who did this” form, critiqued Chicago for lacking, uh, “physicality” against Detroit in the fourth frame. Nikola Vucevic said this.

“In the end, we didn’t sustain the physicality we needed to win this game.”Nikola Vucevic speaks on what the Bulls could have done better in the 4th quarter vs. Detroit pic.twitter.com/rdzIMINQU7

— Bulls on CHSN (@CHSN_Bulls) January 8, 2026 “In the fourth, they really turned it up, and we kind of got away from what worked for us offensively. I think their physicality affected the way we run our offense. They’re a good team, they’re first in the East for a reason,” Vucevic said. “I thought for about three quarters and some, we played them pretty well. Just in the end, we didn’t sustain the physicality we needed to be able to win this game.” Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images
