Blackhawks Trade Buzz: New Trade Boards Include Chicago Veterans ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

With a looming NHL trade freeze before the Olympic break in February, the rumor mill is starting to pick up around the league. And the Chicago Blackhawks have some names that are starting to pop up with other insiders who could be on the move at some point.

On Wednesday, I wrote about some potential trade scenarios for a few current Blackhawks. With a few veterans in the final years of their respective contracts who could be valuable additions to teams chasing a championship, the rumors will continue to involve Blackhawks in the coming weeks — unless they jump fully into the playoff picture and the perception of their deadline approach changes.

Let’s compare three new NHL trade boards that dropped in the last couple days and see what they had to say about a few Chicago Blackhawks.

Chris Johnston — The Athletic David Pagnotta — The Fourth Period Matt Larkin — Daily Faceoff

Johnston ranks 35 players on his big board from 1-35. Pagnotta, meanwhile, ranks 30 players in a 1-30 order. Larkin broke his players into tiers, which I will note below.

Larkin had one Blackhawks player, Jason Dickinson, in his fourth tier (“Theoretical trade chips”) without comment. Dickinson was not mentioned by Johnston or Pagnotta.

Connor Murphy

Larkin ranks Murphy in his fourth tier (“Theoretical trade chips”). Johnston ranks Murphy at No. 12 on his new big board, writing:

Big, strong and experienced, Murphy has posted strong defensive results under less-than-favorable conditions with the Blackhawks in recent years. The right shot comes with an expiring contract that should be fairly easy to move, particularly in light of how few options are likely to be available in free agency next summer. This is a time of transition in Chicago so roster flexibility is paramount.

Pagnotta has Murphy ranked 23rd on his list, writing:

The Blackhawks continue to hold on to Murphy, who is now in the final year of his contract. Chicago GM Kyle Davidson may wait until later in the season before pulling the trigger on a deal in case the Hawks are in the playoff picture.

Laurent Brossoit

Larkin ranks Brossoit in his fourth tier (“Theoretical trade chips”). Johnston ranks Johnston at No. 22 on his new big board, writing:

The fact that he cleared waivers on Dec. 16 should not be viewed as a sign that he won’t generate trade interest. Brossoit has had stretches of elite play in the NHL and is still making his way back from double hip surgery. Clearing waivers allowed him to be sent back to AHL Rockford, where rival teams will be closely monitoring his progress. They also recently saw him score a goal for the IceHogs! The Blackhawks may have to retain some salary on Brossoit in order to make a deal work.

Pagnotta has Brossoit ranked 28th on his list, writing:

Chicago has been trying to find Brossoit a new home, but his cap hit has been an issue. He’s in the final year of his contract and a contender looking to add security between the pipes may come calling.

Nick Foligno

Johnston does not mention Foligno. However, Larkin has Foligno in his second tier (“Names to keep an eye on”), writing:

Think Kyle Okposo in 2023-24. Foligno is almost at the end of the line, but perhaps a contender would pick him up as a legendarily great dressing-room presence in hopes of getting him a ring. He has no official movement restrictions on his contract, but he took a leave of absence earlier this season to be with his daughter who had heart surgery, so he obviously would only be traded if he really wanted to go.
