The Chicago Blackhawks have lost a franchise legend, as famed goaltender Glenn Hall has died at the age of 94.
The NHL confirmed Hall’s passing on Wednesday, and Commissioner Gary Bettman praised his incredible career in a statement following his death.
“Glenn Hall was the very definition of what all hockey goaltenders aspire to be,” he said. “Aptly nicknamed ‘Mr. Goalie,’ Glenn was sturdy, dependable, and a spectacular talent in net.”
Hall was acquired by the Blackhawks prior to the 1957-58 season, and he put together one of the greatest careers in the history of the team.
His crowning achievement as a pro was his legendary Ironman streak, where he started 502 consecutive games for the Red Wings and Blackhawks, all while not wearing a mask.
Hall won the 1961 Stanley Cup championship with the Blackhawks, and his No. 1 jersey was retired by the team.
In 10 seasons with the Blackhawks, Hall appeared in 618 games, posting a record of 276-229-107, with a 2.65 goals against average and a .916 save percentage.
In his career he was named to 13 All-Star Game rosters, and he won the Calder Trophy as the league’s best rookie in the 1955-56 season. He won the Vezina Trophy, given to the league’s best goaltender, on three occasions, and he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1968.
He was named one of the 100 Greatest Players in NHL history during the league’s centennial celebration in the 2017-18 season.
Hall ranks second on the Blackhawks’ all-time wins list with 276, and has the third-best save percentage in team history.
He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.
