Ojai Playhouse announces a weekend celebration of filmmaker David Lynch ...Middle East

News by : (Los Angeles Daily News) -

In honor of the late filmmaker David Lynch’s birthday weekend, the Ojai Playhouse is hosting a multi-day celebration of the life, legacy, and enduring influence of the visionary, iconic artist.

The events will run Jan. 15-20 and feature Lynch’s landmark films, live performances, and a chance for fans to try a cup of espresso from Lynch’s personal La Marzocco GS3 espresso machine, which resides in the Playhouse lobby. Lynch, a longtime practitioner of transcendental meditation, will also be honored with a group meditation scheduled on Jan. 20, his birthday.

Some of Lynch’s greatest films, such as “In Cold Blood,” “Blue Velvet,” “Lost Highway,” “Mulholland Drive,” “David Lynch: The Art Life,” and a series of his short films, will also be shown for free. For times and additional information, visit ojaiplayhouse.com.

Guests attending the Jan. 20 screening of “David Lynch: The Art Life” are invited to arrive at 6 p.m. for a prelude of Lynch’s short films and freshly prepared coffee.

The multi-day event will also feature “Desert Films,” a new stage work inspired by “Lost Highway,” written, directed, and starring James Franco, for two nights on Jan. 16 and 17.

According to a press release from the theater, the “work-in-progress is conceived as a surreal exploration of fame, fantasy, and myth, drawing particular inspiration from the enigmatic ‘Lost Highway’ character Mystery Man, portrayed by Robert Blake.” Rather than a direct adaptation, Desert Films translates Lynchian themes of fractured identity and psychological tension into a live theatrical setting.”

Ojai Playhouse has previously screened many of Lynch’s prominent works, including “Eraserhead,” “The Straight Story,” “Wild at Heart,” “Mulholland Drive,” and “Twin Peaks: The Return.” The space has also hosted collaborators such as actor Laura Dern and “Twin Peaks” co-creator Mark Frost for panels about their work with the filmmaker. Last year, it hosted the West Coast premiere of the 2025 documentary film, “I Know Catherine: The Log Lady,” with director and actor Richard Green and “Twin Peaks” producer Sabrina Sutherland for a post-screening Q&A.

The theater also offers audiences an intimate connection to Lynch himself, alongside memorabilia, and deep blue mood lighting that creates an immersive atmosphere, emulating Lynch’s visual language and his evocative use of color to signal the strange and the mysterious.
