Netflix subtly addresses fan theories about secret Jan. 7 ‘Stranger Things' episode ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Netflix is turning “Stranger Things” fans right-side up.

Amid ongoing theories that the hit show did not actually end with episode eight, the streaming platform quietly addressed the rumors and conspiracy theories with an eight-word message.

(Warning: spoilers below)

Since the finale was released over the Christmas holiday, fans had questioned the ending for being “too perfect,” leading many to speculate that it may have all been a trick.

The speculation, which has since been dubbed “conformity gate,” had fans noting the hand placements of students graduating in Hawkins, Indiana, the binders in the final moments of the finale spelling out “X A LIE,” the appearance of the Wheeler family in the future and the unexplained stories of both Suzie and Vickie.

The easter eggs and inconsistencies, along with the “happy ending,” had some fans believing the finale was actually not real life and just another one of Henry’s memories. They went on to suspect a secret finale would ultimately be released on Jan. 7, also known as Orthodox Christmas, continuing the trend of holiday episode drops.

But on the morning of Jan. 7, Netflix’s social media bio on Instagram read “ALL EPISODES OF STRANGER THINGS ARE NOW PLAYING.” Those heading to the platform would then see that only the original eight episodes were available to watch.

In an interview with Netflix, Matt and Ross Duffer, creators of the show, said they had the ending planned all along.

According to Matt Duffer, the final scene was always set to end with a door closing, and in the case of episode eight, that door was shut by Mike, played by Finn Wolfhard.

“That’s them leaving their childhood behind,” Duffer told Netflix in an interview. “I think Finn gave a really beautiful performance there because you see him go through this real grief and sadness about leaving it behind.”

While they acknowledged the lingering questions over Eleven’s life in the finale, they don’t mention any surprise new ending.

“The reality is, if Eleven is out there, the most that they could hope for is a belief that it’s true because they can’t be in contact with her,” Matt Duffer said. “Everything falls apart if that were the case. So if that’s the narrative, this is really the best way to keep her alive. And it’s about Mike and everyone finding a way to move past what’s happened.”

But it turns out some people do know what really happened to Eleven: Millie and the Duffer brothers. However, they plan to keep the truth a secret.

“We were just talking to Millie about it,” Matt Duffer explained on the Jan. 4 episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. “I think it takes away the power of the ending if you tell people what you were thinking as you were writing it.”
