Council President Pro Tem Kent Lee and Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera put out a joint statement on Tuesday evening recommending that the city suspend the fees until further notice, citing a disjointed rollout with little information readily available to residents and waves of public criticism.
“Additionally, as the administration is aware, there was a scramble recently to affix information regarding resident discounts to the parking payment kiosks,” the statement went on.
“There is also a rush to manufacture signs to inform visitors they can park for free for three hours in the lower Inspiration Point parking lot — essential information that is currently missing from the park.
“The fact that these critical steps are being taken at the last minute, including the signs, which won’t be ready for days if not weeks, shows a clear example that this program is not yet ready for prime time.”
Discounted rates are available to San Diego residents, but that process has not been made particularly clear.
