BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Western New York’s unpredictable weather can cause tree branches to fall and potentially disrupt power. So, when it comes to removing branches from power lines, who’s responsible?
A viewer from Brighton reached out after a tree fell on power lines just past her property line. Amy asked, “Who, if anyone, is responsible for removing hazards from utility lines on public/town owned/utility easement land? Or do customers really need to wait until a line falls and service is impacted before a utility company addresses a known situation?”
She made nearly half a dozen calls to local utility companies, hoping for a resolution before any power outages occurred. When no one came through, she contacted News10NBC.
The Rochester area has had winds up to 62 mph in the past month, leading to incidents like the fallen tree along 590 near her property in Brighton in December. When a tree or branch falls on a utility line, it’s the responsibility of the company that owns the lines to remove it.
Each company has its own policy. RG&E, for example, recommends calling them so they can send a crew to assess the situation. You can read more about their policy here. However, an RG&E crew told our viewer that the lines in question were not theirs.
News10NBC also contacted Spectrum and the company sent a team to inspect and remove the tree within hours. If you encounter a similar situation in your neighborhood, do not attempt to remove the tree or branches yourself. Instead, follow Amy’s example and contact the utility company to handle it.
