Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has backed Gautam Gambhir to continue as the head coach for all formats amid calls for split coaching. While GG’s record as coach in T20Is and ODIs has been phenomenal so far, it has not been the case in the longest format of the game, with India suffering two whitewashes at home in the span of a year. Harbhajan has thrown his weight behind his ex-teammate and has said that there is no need for split coaching in the Indian setup at the moment.
Gambhir good, no need for split coaching
Speaking to news agency ANI, Harbhajan explained that it wasn’t easy to become the coach of the Indian team, pointing out that one had to travel with the team the entire year and keep himself involved in the game. He said that it requires the individual to not only be involved in multiple selections but also focus on match results. Defending Gambhir, Harbhajan claimed that the head coach was not going out to the middle to play for the country. while adding that there was no need to adopt split coaching at the moment.
“Gautam Gambhir does not go there to play. When he was playing, he played well. He played very well for India. Everyone needs to be patient. If you feel you need to split the coaching, such as adopting a policy of one white ball and one red ball, then there is no need to do so for now. But over time, if needed, you should definitely do it. There is nothing wrong with that,” Harbhajan said.
