ALBANY, N.Y. — Lawmakers are set to return to Albany on Wednesday for the start of the 2026 legislative session. One key issue on the agenda is the proposal of “no taxes on tips.”
Last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced her support for exempting state taxes on tips up to $25,000, aligning with a similar measure passed at the federal level.
State Sen. Jeremy Cooney expressed his support for the proposal but cautioned that funding for the exemption needs to be determined.
“We want to make sure that if we take in less because we’re not taxing on tipped wages under her proposal, that we’re not losing out on those vital programs — whether it’s housing programs, or public assistance programs, or early learning and ready programs. So, it’s really that balance and I want to see what that total economic impact will be,” Cooney said.
Gov. Hochul’s State of the State address is scheduled for next Tuesday in Albany, laying the groundwork for the state budget.
