A suburban woman experiencing stomach pain on Christmas ended up giving birth on the holiday, carrying the baby to full term without realizing she was pregnant.
Zion resident Melanie Smith described the experience as a “Christmas miracle,” but it certainly wasn’t what she was expecting when she traveled to a local hospital in the middle of the night.
When doctors examined her, they revealed the shocking news that she was nine months pregnant.
“I thought they were lying to me at first,” she said. “I was like ‘this is a Christmas prank. Like you’re just messing with me. I’ve been told I can’t have kids.’”
Smith told NBC Chicago her menstrual cycle is irregular, so when she missed her period she didn’t think much of it. Aside from that, she said she didn’t experience any major signs or symptoms which could have indicated she was pregnant.
“I had some minor back pains, but none of the traditional symptoms,” she said. “I didn’t have any morning sickness or anything like that. I didn’t even really grow a stomach.”
Smith experienced what is known as a “cryptic pregnancy” in the medical field. Researchers say such pregnancies are rare, occurring in just 1-in-2,500 pregnancies.
The 28-year-old went into emergency labor at a Waukegan hospital before being transferred to Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, she said. That is where she gave birth to baby Vincent, who came into the world happy and healthy, weighing eight pounds.
While she told NBC Chicago she and her husband were overwhelmed with the news, they were also scared they weren’t financially prepared for a baby, but that taking one look at their son convinced them that the challenges would be worth bearing.
“I saw my husband hold Vincent for the first time, and realized ‘oh, actually this is doing things for me. I can’t give up my kid anymore,’” she said.
Needless to say, they are grateful for their Christmas miracle baby.
“He called him his Christmas miracle,” she said. “It was the best surprise for someone who really hates surprises.”
