UK and France will deploy military forces across Ukraine in the form of new “hubs” to monitor and secure any peace deal that is agreed with Russia.
Speaking after a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing allies in France, Sir Keir Starmer said a new declaration signed by leaders sets out the legal framework for British, French and partner forces to operate on Ukrainian soil.
Their presence in the country will offer security guarantees for Ukraine, in the event of any Russian breach of the peace agreement.
The UK will also support the US-led efforts to monitory and verify any ceasefire, Starmer said.
“This is a vital part of our ironcast commitment to stand with Ukraine for the long term. It paves the way for the legal framework under which British, French and partner forces could operate on Ukrainian soil,” Starmer said.
He added: “Post-ceasefire the UK and France will also establish “military hubs” across Ukraine to enable the deployment and build protected facilities for weapons and military equipment to support Ukraine’s defensive needs.”
