Copenhagen, Jan.06 (SANA) Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned of serious consequences should the United States attempt to impose control over Greenland by military means, saying such a move would spell the end of the NATO alliance.
Frederiksen said she believes U.S. President Donald Trump is serious about his stated desire to take over the Danish autonomous territory. Speaking to Danish public broadcaster, she said Denmark’s position is clear and that the government of Greenland has repeatedly rejected becoming part of the United States.
“I think President Trump must be taken seriously when he says he wants Greenland,” Frederiksen said, stressing that both Denmark and Greenland have made their rejection of any annexation explicit.
She cautioned that any U.S. military action against another NATO member would have far-reaching implications. “If the United States were to choose a military attack on another NATO member, everything would come to an end, including the alliance and the security system established since the end of World War II,” she said, adding that she would do everything possible to prevent such a scenario.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also rejected any pressure, writing on social media: “Enough. No more pressure, no more hints, no more illusions of annexation.”
Nielsen said Greenland remains open to dialogue and discussion, but only through proper channels and in accordance with international law.
Greenland is rich in rare earth minerals, and the melting of Arctic ice is opening new shipping routes that are increasingly seen as strategically important for international security.
Since the early months of his return to the White House, Trump has repeatedly called for the United States to assert sovereignty over Greenland, citing its importance to U.S. national security. He has not ruled out using military force, despite Denmark being a U.S. ally and a member of NATO.
