‘Little House on the Prairie’ Actor Reveals How One Move Cost Him a ‘Brady Bunch’ Role ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

In a video posted to his Patrick Labyorsheaux YouTube page in January 2026,  the Little House on the Prairie alum revealed that as a child actor, he thought he nailed an audition for a Brady Bunch episode only to receive disappointing news soon after.

Noting that at the time, The Brady Bunch was one of the “biggest shows in the entire universe,” Labyorteaux revealed that he was “freaking out” when he got an audition for the ABCsitcom. “I was going to, you know, oh my gosh, I'm going to be on The Brady Bunch,” he said. “I'm going to meet all of them. Marcia (Maureen McCormick) and I are going to fall in love and we're going to run away together.”

Labyorteaux added that he and his brother, fellow Little House alum Matthew Labyorteaux (Albert Ingalls on the NBC series), were both adopted. He felt that tidbit could give him an edge during the audition process.

Labyorteaux revealed that casting for The Brady Bunch episode was for one Black actor, one Asian actor, and one White actor. “And so, one of the lines that, you know, I'm auditioning with is, ‘I miss him on this side and him on this side.’ And it was like a big piece of blocking that my mom came up with, for me to go this way and this way,” he said as he pointed his fingers on either side of his shoulders.

Labyorteaux revealed that he received two callbacks after his poignant audition and even filmed a screen test on The Brady Bunch set on the Paramount Studios lot. After the Friday afternoon audition, he waited the whole weekend to hear that he got the role.

Labyorteaux admitted that when the episode finally aired, he was “really excited” to see who got the part he had tried out for.

“And sure enough, the kid that got my part, the one that I was supposed to get, according to me, he goes, ‘I miss him on this side and on this side.’ He stole my move!” Labyorteaux said. “I don't know if I'm the only one that could come up with this move, but I'm pretty sure this charlatan stole my move.”

“His brother got the part on the Kelly Kids,” Labyorteaux said. “Of course, I'm outraged. How dare they hire a brother for the part on the Kelly Kids when his brother's already on The Brady Bunch. They should have hired me.”

The “Kelly’s Kids” episode of The Brady Bunch aired on Jan. 4, 1974. In the episode, Jim and Kathy Kelly (Ken Berry, Brooke Bundy), who are friends with Mike and Carol Brady (Robert Reed, Florence Henderson), adopt three boys played by Todd Lookinland, Carey Wong, and Billy “Pop” Atmore.

ABC never greenlit Kelly’s Kids as a series. In addition, The Brady Bunch was also canceled later that year.
